Artist's Statement

It looks like On the Ice is becoming one of my most liked visual works. Here's some background information on how it came about ...

The initial motif in this work was the artificial moon with its synthetic landscape. From the beginning my goal was to create a surreal "other wordly" atmosphere with very pleasing and harmonious colours. I explored with countless different tones in both the moon and the background until I got it exactly right. At one point my working title for this image was "Milky Way". This naming represented to me the kind of overall vision that I was after.

The penguins came last. I needed something to connect the surreal background and moon into nature, and yet something that would maintain the "other wordly" theme. I tried about six different ideas. But as soon as the concept of a herd of penguins "skating on the ice" popped into my mind I knew I had come up with what I was looking for.

After printing the final result out using my 7-colour giclée process I found that the colours worked so well that the image deserved to be printed in a somewhat larger format. This, then, became my first and so far only 16x20 inch giclée.
